I was vegan for about a year and a half. I went vegan right after going vegetarian. I felt guilty not being vegan when I was vegetarian.

Good luck with it!

Sheesh. I hate restaurant experiences like this one. Did the sauce have cheese or whey in it or something? I've seen mentions periodically of pizza places whose tomato sauce isn't vegan, but I've always assumed it's because there's some kind of meat in the sauce. But if that was the case here, and they recognized you wouldn't want meat, why would they not give you sauce but still give you salami? Baffling.

I actually found early on that I like pizza better without cheese for the most part. The heavy greasiness of the cheese always left me feeling crappy after I ate pizza, but now, eating pizza is essentially healthy, and I get to taste all the yummy vegetables and tomato sauce spices without the flavor or heaviness of cheese overriding everything.

Oh, I loooved the cheese on pizza, even though I agree it made it totally heavy and unhealthy.

Yeah, they didn't explain the no-sauce. It just showed p that way, and I didn't bother to ask.

Hmm... The standard cheese was, for me, just OK. If we're talking feta, though, that's an entirely different story. Pizzas sprinkled with crumbled feta, I loved. I have a couple vegan feta recipes stockpiled that I've yet to try yet. It's on my list though.
