It's been a banner month for magazine mentions of hip & zen.
Not only do the airlines love us. So does InStyle Magazine.
We're listed as one of their Hot Sites in the February issue (and online.) We're number 7 of 8 in their little Hot Site slide show online, featuring none other than our favorite "Statement Scarf" by Deborah Lindquist.
If you travel Southwest Airlines, you might see us on board this month. hip & zen is one of the resources featured in a story in their on board Magazine, Spirit about "eco-chic."
Although I knew this was in the works, I was actually reminded by a blog post at a wonderful blog One/Change. Their tagline is making one change at a time, and I've written so often, in my Metro column, in that guest post at Treehugger and elsewhere, that we just gotta keep trying to take more steps to live by our beliefs, and that our lack of perfection shouldn't stop us! One/Change was given the article by her sister and blogged it, including listing all the other eco-chic resources mentioned. I plan to check them all out, as should you.
In the meantime, One/Change is on our hip & zen blog roll.
UPDATED: Karen tells me that coincidentally we are also in this month's Alaska Airlines InFlight Magazine. (I have a link, but it's been broken all day...tsk, tsk, tsk Alaskan Airlines!) Anyway, unlike the Southwest Airlines article, the Alaskan Airlines article features a picture of one of our best-selling items, the recycled confetti vase (made from recycled shredded newspapers.) You can see that vase in the righthand side bar as a Featured Product. Cool. And only $40.
New items have gone on sale, and items have been put further on sale for hip & zen's January Clearance.
Some of the coolest new sale items are for the home. Personal faves are these wacky "Fish" vases, some of which I made our Featured Promotion. But there are plenty of other cool vases and serving bowls and coasters...all of which are hand made. Some are quite colorful, others more earthy.

So, Lloyd over at Treehugger, one of our favorite hip & zen blogs, posted a link to eBlood. eBlood sells vegan clothing with "an edge." Basically it's trying to appeal to a hard-core youth market, not only with their online merchandise, but also with their message of youthful rebellion and "revolution". Upon reading Lloyd's post, some of his readers took him to task, saying that the guy who runs eBlood is clearly a whack job, and what's so wrong with wool and silk anyway?
Meanwhile Lloyd and I had been exchanging emails about some of hip & zen's latest vegan products (like the way cool sherpa jacket pictured here.)
Lloyd asked me if I'd write a guest post on the rationale behind veganism. I did, and he said he'll be posting it tomorrow. It was kinda long, to be honest, so I'm not sure he'll post all 600-700 words. We'll see. Either way, I'm happy to contribute over there, where they provide the most consistent useful information about sustainability and eco-consciousness.
Did a little hip & zen holiday shopping this week. I had mentioned two pieces of feedback to Karen after getting my first hip & zen order back in October.
First, I had mentioned that I hates those packing peanuts because they always got every where and when you throw them in a recycle bin they inevitably blow about. Is it only a coincidence that this time around my package came with this note inside:
It was easy to just dump the box of peanuts into my sink. Immediately upon wetting them down they did, sure enough, start to dissolve and melt away. The Wicked Witch of the West was brought to mind.Within seconds there was not even the trace of the memory of annoying cornstartch packing peanuts. Yay! Now, I'm sure I always could have washed these babies down the sink, but I didn't know and would never have thought of it. Brilliant to insert that note to let me know!
My second comment was that the necklace I bought had come in a nice pouch and with the front of it covered in plastic, but I mentioned that, being in a white bag, it almost got lost amongst the white annoying cornstarch packing peanuts. So, is it a coincidence that this time the bracelet I bought was still in its nice white bag, but was taped to the tissue wrapped around another item I purchased? I like to think not!
I bought the bracelet I have been lusting after for some time now and am, in fact, wearing it right now. It is definitely as cute as it looks in the picture. The band is very similar to the band son my Skagen watches. I will offer this one bit of advice. I don't have the very skinniest wrists in the world, and I still have the buckle on the very last hole. It's a unisex item, so i guess that's why, but skinny girls beware. I would give this item to any hip guy or gal you know. I love it!
The rest of my purchases were gifts, so I can really talk about them. (Actually, I got two of one of the items...one for a gift, one for myself.) I will just have to check back with you after Christmas and let you know how the gifts went over.
I know a certain someone who has been coveting a certain handbag at hip & zen.com. I've got a new way she might be able to get herself the little indulgence.

Karen had a little preview party at her house last week, and I was not feeling well and had to pass. So I am only now seeing the new products she unveiled.
As a longtime vegetarian (and vegan as far as the outside of my body goes) I've always liked that hip&zen carried lots of vegan handbags (I'm a bit of a purse freak.)
Now she's added the cutest vegan accessories. I'm looking through my holiday gift list, figuring out who would need a make-up brush bag:
