Not all magazines can afford to give away free subscriptions. Maybe Vogue and other huge powerhouses can, but niche magazines typically barely break-even, counting ad sales and subscriptions. Printing and shipping costs A LOT of money, more than advertisers for start-ups and indies are willing to pay, especially for niche marketing. Ads often just barely cover overhead, subs prices cover printing and shipping.
