Are you a locavore?
Obviously as a long-time vegetarian-turned-vegan I've been engaged in mindful eating for a long time. But one can quite easily focus one's mind on only part of the bigger picture. That's why I can be incredibly conscious of whether there are animal-derived ingredients in something, but not care so much about things like high fructose corn syrup or trans fats or where something was grown etc.
I have been trying to eat organic as much as possible for the last couple of years, so I can now tick that one off on the list of things I pay attention to.
But eating locally has only recently made it onto my radar. It's a little surprising, given I live in an area with a rich agricultural tradition, but there it is.
Mom With a Stethoscope provides a quick ten reasons to eat locally. A couple of the reasons (like #5 and #7) don't resonate with me. And I'm not convinced I see significantly lower prices for local goods, but I do like the fact that I contribute back into my local economy, and you gotta figure local stuff is easier on the environment, what with avoiding all the shipping costs.
So, in the pantheon of things one can pay attention to if one cares about the planet...where does locavorism fall for you? Are you a locavore? Considering it?
