Well I've been a little quiet for the last week. First I was madly packing boxes for the holiday rush, and then I flew to South Africa to spend the holidays with my family and see if I could find some interesting hip & zen products in Africa. After 2 days traveling I made it and have managed to come in from the pool occasionally to do some research on what is going on in the South African design scene.
Anyway, thought I'd send some pics of some of the cool African designs I've seen so far...
Incidentally the 3rd and 4th pictures are by a designer who uses images from Drum magazine on her garments. Drum Magazine was a standout magazine during the apartheid years that talked about life as a black person living in South Africa. There is actually a great movie about Drum Magazine, and one of its legendary reporters, Henry Nxumalo, called Drum, that played at the Mill Valley Film Festival this year.
